Some people will do anything to keep from going to jail. Police thought they had this suspect. He was caught, cuffed, read his rights and thrown in the back of the squad car. The next thing they knew their squad car was gone.

A handcuffed theft suspect left alone in a squad car managed to roll down a window, open the car door and drive off with the vehicle. Do you think he got away? As reported in www.washingtonpost.com.

He is still on the lam! The police in the North Texas town are on the search!

Dash cam video from another vehicle caught 41-year-old Darren Porter getting out of the backseat of a car.

Officers had detained Porter on accusations that he had broken into an antiques shop.

So just how did this guy pull a Houdini? Squad cars are supposed to have the window switches in the back of the car disabled, but not this one. Porter was able to roll down the window, reach out and open the door. Dash cam video shows him climbing into the driver’s seat and taking off.

The car was found abandoned at a nearby apartment complex. It is not surprising that Porter is well-known by local police and has been arrested many times before.

Porter was arrested as recently as April on an assault charge. He has a criminal history dating back more than two decades that includes arrests for several burglaries and thefts.

Do you think a stop theft class might have made a difference in Porter’s life? Do you think a series of Texas theft classes in prison will make difference? Well, first police will have to catch him.
