It seems like only yesterday I was writing that not all thieves are stupid. Don’t get me wrong – some are. There are those whose actions lead one to believe that they make very, very, very stupid decisions. This is one of those stories.
I have no idea what his IQ is, but 35-year-old Brent Leonesio from Massachusetts did a very dumb thing. He was arrested for shoplifting a $7 item. That in itself is very dumb. But the fact that he had $30,000 in his pocket at the time makes it asinine. As reported in www.berkshireeagle.com.
The clerk at the convenience store noticed Leonesio stuffing a 16-ounce Coffee Mate drink into his pants. He was a repeat shoplifter at the very store and the employee recognized him from his photograph on the wall!
When they arrested Leonesio, they allegedly found a Naked Juice brand orange juice stuffed into the sleeve of his jacket, $30,311 in cash in his right front pocket and close to 500 various pills in three separate containers.
He told police the cash was student loan money that he keeps on him so he "doesn't get robbed" and that he was a sophomore at a local community college. He said he had a prescription for the pills (all 500!).
Would it surprise you to know that Leonesio has four-page criminal record? He has two previous shoplifting convictions from 2009 and 2001.
Is he a total loss? Do you think he can rehabilitates through stop theft classes, counseling and incarceration? I welcome your response.
