I have often pondered the refrain “older, but wiser.” As a counselor for both in-class and online stop theft classes I often discuss this refrain with my students.

I am not sure if it just me, but there seem to be a lot of older folks doing very stupid things. I never thought older people did these types of things when I was a child. Perhaps I was just naïve.

A Texas octogenarian who is awaiting trial for theft tried to hire a hit man to murder and maim the two prosecutors handling her case. That does not sound like my Grammy.

Dorothy Canfield, 84, of Willis, Texas is accused of seeking an assassin to gun down Montgomery County District Attorney Brett Ligon and put Assistant District Attorney Rob Freyer in the hospital or morgue.

Did she succeed? Not hardly, but on the heels of another recent high-profile murder of a DA she was caught in the nick of time.

Kaufman County assistant DA Mark Hasse was shot dead outside the local courthouse in January, with his boss Mike McLelland and his wife found dead in their home in March.

How was she caught? She was ratted out by a fellow inmate. The fellow inmate told guards of her alleged plan - and they sent in an undercover agent to pose as a trained killer to meet her.

Audio recordings reveal her offering to pay $5,000 to kill Ligon and $2,500 to take care of Freyer. Neither of the pair was injured in the alleged plot.

Canfield was initially being held in Conroe jail on property theft charges that allege she posed as an immigration attorney to bilk clients. She now faces charges of solicitation of capital murder and solicitation to commit aggravated assault on a public servant.

Canfield is 84 – can she be rehabilitated? Would a stop theft class help her in any way? Has she outworn her welcome here on Earth?
