Anyone who ever has been stolen from knows how violated you can feel. This is never more-true than from employers whose employees embezzle from company coffers. Anthony Chiofalo is an embezzling employee.
Chiofalo embezzled more than $9 million from his employer! As reported in www.chron.com.
When authorities raided Chiofalo’s home and storage units they found hundreds of valuable items including a baseball signed by Babe Ruth, a first edition Playboy and the first ever Batman comic book, worth about $900,000.
He had sports memorabilia and very expensive comic books that are like bearer bonds because they're hard to trace. It appears he was using the stolen funds to buy comic books as an investment and we are trying to locate each and every one of those comic books.
In addition to the known thefts, it appears that the 51-year-old thief has more that have yet to be recovered. There are still comic books missing that are worth hundreds of thousands of dollars.
Another piece of sports memorabilia recovered include a boxing robe worn by Muhammad Ali, a signed first edition of Mario Puzo's novel, "The Godfather," and a baseball helmet signed by Pete Rose. Also recovered were dozens of signed posters and scores of baseball cards.
Should his employer have known better? He was working for Tadano America Corp. a wholly owned subsidiary of a Japanese company that manufactures large cranes. In 2009, the company hired Chiofalo, a New York attorney who came to Houston after he was disbarred.
Chiofalo's wife, 51-year-old Susan Chiofalo, has also been charged in the alleged scheme.
If convicted of felony theft of more than $200,000, both face a maximum of life in prison. Do you think a good stop theft class would help these two? Anthony seems like a pretty bad apple (pun intended). He needs some serious ethical training in addition to a series of stop theft classes. His wife too could use a Texas theft class.
