It turns out that gas theft comes in varying degrees. There is the dude who doesn’t have enough money to fill his tank and uses a siphon hose. Then there are those who steal thousands of barrels of unrefined oil.

So, exactly how does one go about stealing barrels of oil? Here is a snippet from Africa from allafrica.com. These guys did not steal just one or two barrels, but more than 40,000 barrels – every single day!

South Sudan has closed another 242 oil wells as the government announced it had unearthed a theft syndicate involving more than 40,000 barrels per day.

The closed wells were part of the Palaung oil fields in Upper Nile state that accounts for more than 60 per cent of the young nation's crude output.

There are 600 oil wells in Palaung oil fields and shutting the 242 wells will halve the controversial daily output of 250,000 barrels per day.

The field is held by Petrodar Oil Company, the biggest oil operator in the country.

The theft was uncovered when technicians discovered that an additional 40,000 barrels were being produced per day on top of 230,000 barrels per day the company reported.

How does this happen? You think corruption is involved? Do you think a stop theft class might help?
