You would think a public defender would know better than to shoplift, right? The public defender we are blogging about today has definite issues, including shoplifting.

Lorie E. O’Donnell was arrested for stealing a can of Red Bull energy drink from a grocery. This according to the Washington Post. The public defender of Loudoun County, O’Donnell, was issued a summons and released, she also lost her driver’s license after a sheriff determined it had been suspended.

The 46-year-old has overseen the public defenders, a taxpayer supported office, in the criminal courts since at least 1998 and also handles cases herself.

This was not her first shoplifting-related incident. O’Donnell had been caught stealing from the same store once before but was not charged.

She was caught by the store’s security officer who watched her select several items from the store’s shelves, place them in her cart, and then place a can of Red Bull beside her purse, and then inside her purse. The officer reported she watched the woman through the checkout process, and she did not attempt to pay for the drink.

O’Donnell admits that she may have a shoplifting problem. Obviously, money was not an issue and she could have paid the $2.59. She has real issue with stealing and has vowed to seek help.

Hopefully a Virginia shoplifting class and counseling will help keep O’Donnell on the right side of the law in the future.
