Dana Carvey made “The Church Lady” a fixture in popular culture back in the early 1990s. While his “Church Lady” was obsessed with Satan, the church lady in this theft blog was obsessed with stealing.
Anita Collins does not look like a thief. But then again, what does a thief look like. Over the years I have blogged about numerous church officials who have stolen from their church only to repent wholeheartedly once caught. Check out the photos and see if you think she is sorry for her actions. Do you think she could use an online theft class? Of course she will have to answer for them down the road. As reported in www.nydailynews.com.
The 68-year-old Collins embezzled $1 million from the New York Archdiocese for lavish shopping sprees at Barney's and Brooks Brothers, She was sentenced to 4 ½ to 9 years behind bars.
This was not the first time she had gotten caught stealing. In 1999, she ripped off $46,000 from a temp agency where she had been the bookkeeper, and was ordered to pay back $10,000.
The church gave her a second chance and look at how she repaid it. And despite being ordered to repay the $ million she stole, there is no chance of that ever happening.
According to her attorney she is broke and has no explanation for what happened to the funds.
The geriatric bookkeeper could have faced 25 year for cutting 458 checks to her son for phony expenses, then depositing them into her account. She always kept the amount of the checks under the amount necessary to get a supervisor's approval.
Collins blew $18,000 of the stolen loot on Bloomingdale's furniture, $14,000 on clothes from Brooks Brothers and $19,000 at an Irish gift shop. She was paid $50,000-a-year for her job as a bookkeeper.
A chunk of the ill-gotten gains were spent buying expensive Madame Alexander handmade dolls for her collection.
There is no excuse for her behavior. She is immoral and a thief. I hope while in prison she is mandated a good stop theft class and counseling for her aberrant behavior.
