As a counselor for both in-class and online stop shoplifting classes I often discuss theft in popular culture. More often than not, celebrities who have been arrested for attempting to take a five-finger discount becomes a topic of conversation.

When you think of Britney Spears, what comes to mind? For me it is an indiscreet photo of her exiting a limousine, shaving her head and going into and out of rehab. I almost forget she was busted for shoplifting.

A childhood star for Disney and a blockbuster sensation in her teens, Spears has definitely experienced highs and lows during her career. During her low-point in 2007, Ms. Spears was busted for shoplifting on a number of occasions. Most notably was a video she filmed of herself stealing a lighter from a gas station.

Another incident occurred in a sex shop where she stole a wig after not being allowed to try on some underwear. Her third run-in in 2007 occurred when she walked out of a designer store with a top she had conveniently forgotten to pay for.

I would say that a shoplifting class is certainly in order for Ms. Spears and would like to continue to see her stay on the right side of the law.
