Golf courses had the reputation of being stodgy places where rich, old duffers went to spend their retirement smoking cigars and drinking overpriced whiskey. This is not the case anymore. From drug dealers selling marijuana and cocaine to thieves grabbing golf carts, the greens are now a place for felonies as well as fellows.

You know it is a sleepy hollow when trying to solve a spate of golf-cart thefts is big news.

Police like to say - it's always a good thing, too, to keep parked vehicles locked up in garages overnight or, at a minimum, locked up in driveways, with valuables stores inside our residences.

Serious Problem of Golf Cart Theft

In all, 23 golf carts are missing and there’s a $1,000 reward for information leading to an arrest. The rash of golf cart thefts reportedly has been occurring in unincorporated Hillsborough County (Maine) since December, and mostly in the southeastern part of the county. The latest theft was Jan. 23.

Collectively the thefts have amounted to a loss pegged at between $25,000 to $35,000.

Most of the stolen golf carts are privately owned, some are from Little Harbor Resort. A variety are from mobile home parks, where most of are from. Out of those cases, a few of the golf carts have been recovered.

What investigators don’t know is if the golf cards are being resold or dismantled for parts. I never knew there was such a market for used golf cart parts.

Each hamlet has its own problems. I would guess there is not a dozen golf carts in the entire town I live in. Theft classes might be a good place to start
