Why do people shoplift? Do you think it is out of necessity?

Actually it isn’t. As the educational director for a theft education and prevention class, I can assure you that more than 90% of my students are in the class for shoplifting that had nothing to do with the need for sustenance. As reported in www.wjla.com.

Shoplifting is always a bad idea – even if there is a necessity for sustenance. Sometimes, a simple theft to get a thrill can turn into way more than the thief bargained for. Here is a classic example.

A store manager's unsuccessful attempt to stop a shoplifter ended with the fleeing suspect in custody and more than two dozen people being treated by fire fighters.

It all started when 24-year-old Cierra Bianca Scott tried to steal a pair of When the manager confronted her, she sprayed him with pepper spray. Police say 25-30 people ended up getting caught in the cloud.

The suspect fled with the boots, but a mall security officer confronted her. She made matters even worse by threatening them with a knife. The security guard disarmed her. The officer took the pepper spray from her and used it on her.

No one was seriously hurt, and security held the suspect in custody until police arrived. She's charged with robbery, theft, assault and reckless endangerment.

Now she will spend some time in jail and pay plenty in fines and restitution. Was it worth it? I hope she is mandated to a good stop theft class while behind bars.
