How much toner do you have to steal for it to be worth $1.2 million? That number seems virtually impossible.

Yet this is the figure that Marque Gumbs stole in toner from a major New York City hospital. The Big Apple is also a location for the largest toner theft in United States history. Gumbs pleaded guilty to embezzling $1.2 million to buy toner which he then stole and resold. Holy Cow!

For his efforts Gumbs will get to spend the next 7.5 years living rent free – on Riker’s Island! In addition to prison time he also must return his BMW, a pair of jewel-encrusted watches and an array of other electronic gadgets he bought from the proceeds.

Not One of the Few Good Men

In a case of someone that has been loathsome in his or her thieving add retired Commander Charles Coughlin. Honored for his valor during the Sept. 11 attacks on the Pentagon is being tried for a third time on allegations that he exaggerated his injuries to get money from the victims compensation fund.

How’s this for typical Washington DC gridlock. Coughlin stole $331,034 from the fund set up by Congress in the wake of the attacks. It is clearly a case where Coughlin sought to take advantage of the country's generosity by filing a false claim. Coughlin's attorney denied the allegations and described him as a hero who helped rescue other victims in the attack.

Coughlin was first tried in 2009 but the jury couldn't agree on a verdict. A second trial a few months later was cut short by a Supreme Court decision altering his case.
