In a setting right out of Hooville, the imaginary hamlet whose residents bore the brunt of the Grinch in Dr Seuss’s classic “The Grinch Who Stole Christmas” comes the story of a modern day thief who stole food.
Freezers formerly stocked with meat are sitting empty this week at the Salvation Army’s food pantry. As reported in clintonherald.com.
Although there are so many needy families, the Salvation Army is left with a couple of fish filets after being the victim of a theft that resulted in more than $800 worth of meat being stolen.
These institutions are living on the edge of survival. A theft like this is felt by many.
Police reported $600 worth of New York strip steaks and $210 of ground beef were stolen from the facility. The shed housing the freezer sustained $100 worth of damage, while the freezer suffered $300 of damage. The stolen goods were earmarked for the emergency food pantry and the upcoming youth program.
This Salvation Army outlet services more than 80 families!
The Benevolent Society, another charitable organization that provides food for the needy, used to service 35 families per month, but last year the number reached 60, and this year, that number has ballooned to more than 80.
These are very worthy organizations helping our fellow Americans. That one would steal and directly affect the lives of 80 needy families sickens me. I would hope that with increased religious training and stop theft classes we can cut into the number of thefts overall.
