Embezzlement is a universal evil. From the farthest reaches of Asia, to North America and even Antarctica, there is no escaping this societal scourge. Even the native Americans here in the United States suffer its afflictions.

The former chairman of the tribe that runs one of the world's largest casinos and his brother, the tribe's treasurer, have been charged with stealing a combined $800,000 from their Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation. As reported in abcnews.go.com.

Despite being on a tiny reservation in rural southeastern Connecticut, the Foxwoods Resort Casino has made a huge name for itself by landing spots in major poker tournaments as well as in television shows like HBO’s “The Sopranos.”.

The former chairman, Michael Thomas, 44, is accused of stealing more than $100,000 in tribal funds and federal grant money between 2007 and 2009 during his tenure as leader of the tribal council. He lost his job for mismanagement of tribal funds.

His brother, 38-year-old, Steven Thomas, the tribe’s treasurer, stole more than $700,000 between 2005 and 2008 when he was assistant director of the tribe's natural resources department.

Interestingly, the tribe does not want the US government to intervene and continue with these charges. Despite the probable guilt, the tribe prefers to handle the issue internally. What do you think?

The Mashantucket Pequots, a tribe of roughly 900 people whose Foxwoods casino opened in 1992, once enjoyed annual stipends exceeding $100,000 for each adult member.

What do you think should happen to these two? Should the government butt-out? Would a stop theft class turn these two around?
