My grandfather used to repeat to me an adage the he was “older, but wiser.” While it is true wisdom can come from experience, this does not mean that seniors do very dumb things too.

I have written many times that most theft does not occur out of necessity. While that it is for shoplifting and petty theft, it is not true with most bank robberies. A perfect example of all of the above is Deltha Nation.

Perhaps you have read about her story. Her mugshot is arresting (pun intended). Her crimes were heinous and very stupid.

Two years ago, Nation walked into a Safeway grocery store and robbed the Wells Fargo branch located inside the building. She handed the teller a note saying she would infect her with AIDS if she did not empty out the drawers.

That money lasted the 64-year-old almost a year. To replenish her living expenses Nation returned to the scene of the crime and attempted the same gimmick. Employees recognized her and called police. However, nation must have senses trouble because she left without even handing over the note demanding money.

What dumb thing did she do next? Of course she tried to rob the same bank again! This time she was caught.

Do you think a theft class would work for her? Can you teach an old dog new tricks?
