Every day I read some article or blog about something that has seen a serious spike in the number of thefts. This week’s spike is bicycle theft.

Across the country bike thefts are up. Perhaps it is because due to the price of gasoline more people are riding bikes. What do you think? As reported in www.marketwatch.com.

Bike thefts in New York quadrupled in the past year.

Bike owners need to take security precautions and I am not talking about just the traditional lock and chain. Those are child’s play for today’s thieves. Bike owners need to have security information engraved on the bicycle so that it will help authorities track stolen bikes.

Many bike thieves never think to even report bike thefts because they see no possibility that their bike ever will be found and returned. That is why engraving can play a huge role. So too can licensing your bike.

Anyone who has had their bike stolen is encouraged to report it to police. Last year police across the nation arrested more than 500% more bike thieves than they did five years ago. Proper security measures are the key to keeping bikes safe.

Plus, judges are sentencing bike thieves to theft classes which also acts as a deterrent from the thieves repeating past theft activity.
