Oh the irony of it all. In olden days your name signified what you did for a living. For example if your last name was “Smith” you most likely were a blacksmith. If you name was “Miller” you milled grain. If your name was "Fletcher" you fletched arrows. What do you think Rogelio Hackett, Jr. does? If you guessed computer hacking you would be correct.

The 25-year-old Georgia native will be spending at least 10 years behind bars for his thievery. His crime was not simply hacking into a computer, Hackett stole or bought more than 675,000 credit card numbers and created more than $36 million in fraudulent charges.

When a person robs a bank of $50K they get 25 years to life in prison. How could Hackett get off so easily? This guy is a career identity thief who bilked not only thousands of individuals, but banks and merchants too. The laws are way too lenient for identity theft which has reached epidemic proportions in the United States.

In 2009, federal agents searching Hackett’s home found the stolen credit card numbers in computers and e-mail accounts. Apparently, he obtained the numbers by hacking into business computer networks or buying the information over the Internet.

Hackett, who pleaded guilty in April, admitted that he also sold credit card information, and manufactured and sold counterfeit cards. Again why such a light sentence for such a bad, bad person? Oh yeah, the judge also imposed a paltry $100K fine.
